Oregon Coast Aquarium Claws into Crab Facts and Fun for Crab Fishery Day
Newport, Oregon - The Oregon Coast Aquarium will scuttle into crab facts and fun for its visitors in honor of Crab Fishery Day on December 30.
Aquarium staff will host interactive crab-themed activities for all visitors to enjoy. The animal keepers that care for the
Aquariums fishes and invertebrates, known as aquarists, will host a lunch crab style, providing visitors with an
opportunity to see a live Dungeness crab eat. Guests may learn how to clean crabs for consumption and the animals
unique adaptations during a dissection.
In The Sea & Me exhibit gallery, kids can test their crab sorting skills in a race to beat professional fishermens times. Crab Fishery Day also features story time in the Aquariums theatre and opportunities for visitors to hold live hermit crabs and don kid-sized ocean survival suits.
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will provide visitors information about recreational clamming and crabbing, complete with live crabs and clams to help visitors learn how to identify their potential catch. The Newport Fishermens Wives will share seafood recipes and stories of the local fishing industry. The Lincoln County Historical Society will tell tales of the history of fishing off Newports shores.
Fisheries Days, including Crab Fishery Day, are organized by the Oregon Coast Aquarium to spread awareness and understanding of the people of Oregons fishing industries and the marine animals and environments they depend on for their continued success.
The Oregon Coast Aquarium is open every day, except December 25, this winter from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
